Carrying on…

IMG_5777.jpg

On a smaller canvas I kept applying layers of white paint and then trying to chip it off. As I applied layers of watercolour on top the white paint would soften, meaning I could move the paint around and chip away at it.

IMG_5813.jpgWith this painting I had painted a bright colourful painting underneath, I wanted to keep elements of this. I firstly applied a few layers of white wall paint, the first layer I simply chucked on and went over with a a roller, the following layer I poured on heavy and moved around the paint with my feet.img_5819IMG_5818.jpgFinally after the white paint dried I simply threw on a cup of dirty water, I smudged around with my hands and left to dry. Below was the final outcome.IMG_5843.jpg

Playing

I began using clay, I have always loved using clay and thought it would be a great idea to use it similarly to paint. I used thick chunks of clay, watered down clay (slip) and then began to use white wall paint.

IMG_5789.jpgAfter smudging, throwing and getting messy I hoped that it would dry a paler grey so it would look similar to concrete or a wall.IMG_5812.jpgI wanted to use old already used canvas’ so that what was underneath determined what I did. I wanted something that held history and already had a story.IMG_5811.jpgI painted this canvas white, leaving areas of the old painting behind in sections. I then began applying layers and layers of coffee, I also used yellow ochre and blue watercolours and allowed them to fall down the canvas. This canvas I left like this, it showed for me sadness and the idea of using something old and worn. The back of the canvas was a flowery fabric as well which I wanted to show in my final piece.

What happened?!

I found myself stuck, I knew what I wanted to do I just did not know how to do it. I had explored so many different styles and routes that I was not sure which path to take. After about a week of not finding my feet I tried to change my path to something I knew I could do and enjoyed. Fabric! I thought I would combine what I had learn with the flowers and apply it to fabric, for me the flowers and fabric fitted hand in hand. Some of the petals and the way I had distorted them on the photocopier reminded me of fabric.

After attempting the fabric I found that was not really what I wanted to do either, what I wanted to do was just play. I wanted to use everything I had learnt about the paints and different materials I had used. So that is what I did.

Influential Artists

I have been inspired by artists such as Adrian Ghenie who combines realism with this abstract motion of paint. Jacco Hinke also produces very similarly what I wanted to produce, he paints beautiful flowers that fit with the traditions of still life but combines abstract movement on top of the detailed flowers. I wanted to produce something similarly to his work, however I would like it to become slightly more contemporary as his paintings still fit similarly with the works of traditional Dutch still lives. I have used a range of secondary sources such as books from the library and I attend gallery visits such as a future still life exhibition at Bay Art in Cardiff bay. The exhibition at Bay Art opened up new ideas and processes for me, trying to include texture and painting something that was made out of other objects.

Painting on a large scale

After experimenting with watercolours and distortion I knew I wanted to start painting on a larger scale, however at this point I was unsure about where I was going next.

I played around with collage, still including the watercolour but combining other mediums such as pen, and and pastels. IMG_5192.jpgI also tried experimenting with trying to create my work more abstract by using the oil paints in my favour, I tried painting and then experimenting with dripping, pouring and painting on white spirit.IMG_5324.jpgI then wanted to try and combine everything I had found out onto a large scale. The image below is of an old canvas I had found that I began to work on. I actually really enjoyed working on a canvas that had already been worked on, it determined what i did next. IMG_5645.jpgFor me this canvas was one of my favourites, it allowed me to play around with materials and allowed me to express my emotions on a large more impacting scale.

Watercolour

Through my journey of discovering oil paints I found it extremely difficult to make oil glazes (oil painted thinned through using white spirit or linseed oil). I decided to work back at watercolour paints as they have always been a strong point for me.IMG_5136.jpgI began painting really loose abstract flowers with watercolours (similar consistency to thinned oil paints).IMG_5139.jpgAfter exploring different abstract routes for painting flowers and using different materials such as salt and tissue paper to alter them slightly, I began to wonder where this could take me.IMG_5142.jpgI tried painting on different materials, here I have painted on white icing as I thought it would be unusual to paint on. I also tried painting on toast, although that did not work out due to the watercolour would not stick to the toast.IMG_5162.jpgI also explored painting on used or damaged surfaces such as these receipts which for me worked better as they came with a history.

Photocopier

I experimented through using the photocopier, I found in previous years sometimes the photocopier can explore objects differently to a camera. I began placing my flowers on the photocopier and moving them, this way you still received a flower image, however it was distorted. 14718697_10154681448232720_4344265028430413292_n.jpgThe more flowers I placed on the photocopier the more interesting the images became, I found the best way was to have two people moving a bunch of flowers at the same time. I then began to paint these images in more detail on a canvas.IMG_5016.jpgThis painting fully showed the distortion I had captured with the photocopier, it appears so unusual yet recognisable. However, it was rather dull and lacked in luminosity, I wanted to carry on exploring with oil paints to try an get that luminous glossy finish to my work.

Observations

I aimed to explore still life, pushing the traditions of traditional still life and trying to create a more contemporary still life. I also aimed to create a painting that explores how abstraction and realism can exist in one image. I also wanted to explore and push distortion through my work and aimed to extend my vocabulary with painting media as a means to elicit an emotional response from the viewer.

I began through making observational drawings and paintings, I wanted to push oil paints and improve my knowledge of how to use them I wanted to grow in confidence with painting and using oils. I explored through preparatory pieces and final works the combines use of abstraction and realism within images. I explored ways to create paintings of still life that convey my emotional response to the subject and which have the potential to elicit an emotional response from the viewer. IMG_5634.jpgIMG_5633.jpg

Initial Ideas

I have been continuously interested in conceptual art and how I might apply these to painting. I am interested in the relationship of my understanding of my work to that of the viewer. I am interested in the relationship and comparison between realism and abstraction.

I was focussing on breaking the boundaries of traditional still life I wanted to create something that expresses my current emotions. I had recently been diagnosed with depression, it was a really difficult time in my life, I found art a helpful way to keep me self distracted. I wanted to portray current feelings of emptiness, lost, alone, sadness and confusion to come across in my work.
